Objectives

Objectives: Review specific insertion procedure for each of the following insertion sites:

• Internal Jugular Access
• Subclavian Access
• Axillary Access
• Femoral Access

Before inserting the CVC, take maximal barrier precautions. Every person directly involved in the procedure must perform proper hand hygiene and wear a sterile gown, sterile gloves, mask and hat. All personnel in the room during the procedure must wear a hat and mask. The sterile field is established by prepping the skin with chlorhexidine and covering the patient with a full body sterile drape (9). Use of a sterile insertion kit including catheter and all components necessary to perform the insertion is consistent with the SHEA/IDSA strategies for infection prevention (8).
