Patient Assessment and Site Selection Using Ultrasound

Internal Jugular

ij right position for ultrasound          ij right ultrasound probe position

The internal jugular vein lies laterally to the carotid artery, which pulses and is visible at the lateral cervical area. The site of insertion is at the apex of the triangle formed by the two heads of the SCM (sternocleidomastoid muscle) and the clavicle (29). The right side is preferred due to its more direct route to the SVC (32).
