INSERTION-RELATED COMPLICATIONS

Trouble Threading Catheter into Vein
A catheter may be difficult to thread if there is an impediment related to the valve, the catheter is badly positioned, or the cannulated vessel is too small.

Symptoms include:

  • Difficult threading or dragging of the catheter
  • Catheter will not advance

Prevention/Management
Reassess blood flow when having difficulty threading wire or catheter, and use ultrasound to ensure vessel size and patency prior to insertion.
