Maximal Barrier Precautions
(continued)
Skin Antisepsis: When preparing the skin prior to insertion, use 2% Chlorhexidine Gluconate (CHG) with 70% isopropyl alcohol as the antiseptic established in recommendations and guidelines. While no agent can completely rid the skin of every single microorganism, CHG with alcohol is proven to be effective over the most common infectious microbes. Chlorhexidine is recommended both for its broad-spectrum action on bacteria and viruses as well as its residual effect. CHG provides continual residual killing action for 48-72 hours after application. In addition, because Chlorhexidine with alcohol dries much faster, it reduces the likelihood that the catheter will be inserted before bacteria have died (
When using Chlorhexidine with alcohol, cleanse with a back and forth frictional scrub to penetrate the pores and skin crevices providing maximum effectiveness. In addition, repeated use of Chlorhexidine with alcohol enhances its effectiveness because it binds with skin cells, prolonging its antimicrobial activity.
Cleanse the catheter insertion site prior to catheter placement using the following technique:
- Apply antiseptic solution using a frictional back and forth motion until all applicator solution is used/dry.
- Begin at the center of intended insertion site and work toward the exterior edge.
- Allow antiseptic solution to air dry for at least 30 seconds (Follow specific manufacturers' instructions for use). Do not blow or blot dry.
